(Hint: It’s easier than you think!)

The secret to writing is that there is no ‘secret.’ In fact, the art of writing is simple: it’s about writing one damn word after another. That’s it. The real trick is getting started. If you dream of writing but need a supportive nudge, we can help. Write on Target, our accountability tracking program is an effective way to coax words from your head to the page.

We’ll help you set reasonable writing goals within a chosen timeline, establish good habits, and provide support to keep you on track. Since you own the process, you’ll be amazed how the word count grows over time.

Frequently asked questions

At a high level, how does this program work?

We start with a consultation about your writing habits. Together we set a timing goal for a daily writing plan that’s right for you. We send you a plan by email and you fill it in every writing day to track your progress (time and words written). You also note how you feel after each session (which can reveal valuable info). Each day you log your tally in your plan and send it to NovaHeart. Then each week, you send your plan with the cumulative progress. During the three-month program, we schedule one 30-minute call to discuss your progress and challenges.

Couldn’t I just create my own plan, fill it in myself and keep my money?

Yes. But will you? The people who will benefit the most from this program are those who appreciate accountability and having a writing buddy (who cares about your progress). If you are entirely self-motivated and accountable to yourself, save your money–you don’t need this program (read on).

What kind of writing project works for this program?

Almost any long form writing project–fiction, non-fiction, memoir or thesis–you name it (poetry is a possibility but may not benefit you as much. Please ask us). The purpose is to get into the habit of writing and watch your word count grow. You’ll be amazed and inspired as you track your progress. For example: did you know that if you get up to speed to write even 30 minutes a day, you could finish a non-fiction book in less than a year?

Does this program help everybody?

No. This program works best for people who are deeply committed to writing and willing to account for their output. You must be willing to log your progress and report back daily for a certain length of time (agreed to in advance).

Who is not suited to this type of program?

Generally, this is not good for mavericks, wildcards and those who don’t like setting goals or reporting back (especially when it’s not going well). Also, if you are someone who likes to start things, but lose interest quickly, this may not be for you. We do not want your money if we think this is not right for you–and we’ll tell you that.

How will you determine if this program can help me?

We’ll start with a consultation, asking lots of questions about your writing project (novel, short story, article, thesis, etc.). We’ll learn about your writing history, your goals, your fears and how committed you are to the project. If we don’t think it’s in your best interest to follow this program (or in our best interest), we won’t move forward. We don’t want to waste your money or time.

What happens if I start and do my best, but still can’t get started? Can I get my money back?

Yes, you have 30 days to decide if this is for you. If it is not working, we understand–and no hard feelings. Just let us know and we’ll refund your money.

What happens if I have a sudden life change? (illness, change in employment, family issues).

We understand, life happens. You have a 30-day, money-back guarantee. If it’s after 30 days, we will only bill you for the active months, but you will not be obliged to pay for future months. You will also have the option of putting it on hold and returning to it when you are ready. In other words, we’ll do our best to meet you where you are in life.

What type of writer does this help?

You might be a procrastinator who simply needs some support to get organized. You may be a writer–excited to write, but also blocked from getting started. Or, you have too many ideas and just don’t know where or how to start. We’ll do our best to figure out what’s stopping you from writing (Spoiler Alert: it’s mostly due to fear of failure, or ironically, fear of success!).

Do you read and critique the work written?

No, we do not send feedback on your work. This is a program focused on establishing regular writing habits, tracking your ability to ‘show up’ and celebrating goals achieved.

Why does this program work?

Write on Target works because you have determined you want to achieve your goal and you are willing to put in the work. It’s that simple. For example, if you’ve ever been part of a fitness buddy system, you’ll know that when you commit to run with a friend on a certain day, you show up even if you don’t feel like it (and then you feel great afterwards!). This works on the same principle–if you are making a commitment to NovaHeart (and paying for it), you’ll either do it out of pride, dedication, or to get your money’s worth (or all three). Whatever it takes.

How long does the program run?

Typically, a program runs for three months to ensure you’ve established good writing habits. This is not a template, it is a customized plan for each person, based on your needs and dreams. Therefore, some may choose to continue on a monthly basis (at a discount) until the project is complete–it is your choice.

How much do I have to write daily?

We start with the minimal amount of time you believe you can realistically achieve–is it 5 10, 15 or minutes? While 5 minutes may seem short, we find that starting small and working your way up has far more chance of success. We also discuss how many days per week (typically 5, but it depends on your schedule and life). You are part of the goal setting, to make sure it aligns with your lifestyle.

I’m really busy. How on earth can I find to write?

It may be easier than you think. Do you fiddle away 15 minutes a day on social media, Netflix, TV or email? If so, it’s easy to redirect 15 to 30 minutes a day to writing. Mostly, it’s about establishing priorities (and reporting back). The other benefit? You’ll feel much more excited about what you’ve written than hanging out on social media, or watching TV.
